Muddy Boots
FALL COLOR OVERNIGHT HIKE
Tuesday-Wednesday, October 23-24, 2007
Cumberland Falls Kentucky State Resort Park

$5 dollar fee per person: This fee will pay for the Moonbow room rent and party supplies (napkins, glasses). It may be enough to get coffee after dinner. We're still working out the details. We want to start collecting this fee at the October social. We've got nearly 60 people signed up. When we visited the Park in September, the river levels were quite low because of the drought. We're hoping for some rain before the trip. The fall colors may also be subdued due to the drought as well.

Arrival: Please plan on arriving about 1 pm. We will meet in the Moonbow Room in the lodge. You should leave Tellico no later than 10:30 to get there on time. Our cabins/lodge rooms may not be ready yet. Once we have all assembled we will do our first hike. The first hike: The first hike will be an easy hike along the river. It's called the Cumberland River Trail, Trail Number 2. We will walk about 2 miles down the river and back. There is little elevation change on this hike. Everyone should be able to do this hike. We should get back from this hike a bit after 3pm. All our rooms will be ready by then.

Before dinner get together: We will meet in Lou and Rose's cabin for drinks and appetizers. Our cabin is a bit bigger than the others, but 50+ plus folks in it should really rock. Please bring something to share. Maybe one appetizer per cabin? And bring your drinks. Be discreet carrying alcoholic beverages outside in the park. Carry them in a bag.

Dinner: Dinner will start at 6:30pm in the Lodge restaurant. We will be ordering off the menu in a semi-private room. If the resort is crowded, non-New Villagers will be in the room with us. There are no alcoholic beverages allowed in the restaurant.

After Dinner: We will gather in the Moonbow Room. We can bring alcoholic beverages here, but no food. The room will be set up with tables, so be sure to bring your game equipment.

The Second Hike: Everyone is on their own for breakfast on Wednesday morning. Cook in your cabin or go to the Lodge restaurant. At 10am we will gather for the second hike. This hike is quite scenic and short, but it is not an easy hike. It is called Trail 9: Eagle Falls Trail. It is only two miles round trip, but it is quite steep with many steps up to the top of the ridge and then down to the river. Nice views of two water falls, though the water levels are quite low.

See you there!

Cumberland Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the Eastern United States. The waterfall is 125 feet wide and 60 feet high. There are a number of different hiking trails within the State Park. Here’s the address for their website: http://parks.ky.gov/resortparks/cf/index.htm

We will drive to the State Park on Tuesday morning and then hike about 4 miles and see Cumberland Falls prior to checking into the cabins to stay the night. The second morning we will hike about 3 miles to Eagle Falls prior to returning to Tellico Village. Horseback rides will be available as an option on Wednesday, either in place of or in addition to the hike. The rides last about an hour and the cost is $12. Reservations are not required. The rides leave every hour on the hour beginning at 10:00 AM.

We will have dinner in the restaurant in the park lodge on Tuesday night. Meals will be in the $11 to $15 range. Breakfast on Wednesday morning will be on your own – either at the restaurant or on your own in your cottage.

The rooms are wonderful 2-bedroom, 2 or 2.5 bath executive cabins. They each have full kitchens and a nice living area with fireplace.

The cost for each couple for the cabin will be about $100. But here’s the kicker: The cost of the cabin is about $200. You must arrange to share the 2-bedroom executive cottage with another couple, because when you call to make your reservation, you will be reserving the entire cabin and be on the hook for $200. If you don’t know of another couple to share the cabin with, ask Lou or Rose if they know of another couple that wants to go. We will try to help you find cabin-mates.

YOU MUST CALL the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park to make your reservation. Their number is 800-325-0063. You must mention Muddy Boots.

The date is October 23. We plan to have a social hour before dinner that could include a beverage of your choice, cheese, snacks, etc. On Muddy Boots overnights we often have a room that we socialize in before and after dinner. We can get a room here, but the cost is an additional $150, or about $10 per couple.

Lou has reserved 12 executive cabins (24 couples, 48 people). If we fill all the cabins, there will still be rooms available in the Lodge.

Very important: Let us know if you have made reservations!
